‘Cooking with Lynja’ TikTok star, Lynn Yamada Davis dies at 67

Lynn Yamada Davis, better known as the ‘Cooking With Lynja’ TikTok star. At the age of 67, Davis had become a beloved figure on the popular video-sharing platform, captivating millions with her infectious enthusiasm for cooking.

Davis rose to fame through her unique approach to sharing recipes and culinary tips. Her videos were not just about cooking; they were an expression of joy and love for food. With her warm smile and charismatic personality, she brought people together from all walks of life, inspiring them to try new dishes and explore their own creativity in the kitchen.

Her daughter, Hannah Mariko Shofet, told The New York Times her mother died of esophageal cancer.

In a video posted to social media, Davis' son showed a series of photos of her, as a child, a college student at MIT, and one after she graduated with a degree in civil engineering. "She's so cool," he said of his mother. Her son showed pictures of Davis as a young mother with his older brother, a professional soccer player, and said that she was a "proud mom." There were photos of their old kitchen and photos of Davis running — she ran eight marathons, her son said.

One of the photos Tim showed gave followers a glimpse into their family's old kitchen from 1995, where she was helping him roll out the dough while standing on a step stool. "Way different than the 'Cooking with Lynja' kitchen," he said in the video.

Culinary creators regularly collaborate with one another through in-person pop-ups and events, so it comes as no surprise that Davis' lasting impact is being celebrated in the form of social media tributes.

TikTok career began during the pandemic when she partnered on a set of cooking tutorial videos with her youngest son, Tim Davis, 27, in the hopes of honing his cinematography skills. That signature style, with quick cuts and floating edits of Davis, was on prominent display in every Cooking With Lynja video.

Columbia University’s Business School. Davis spent her career working for the federal government and at AT&T Labs for 29 years before her post-retirement stint as the “internet’s grandma,” as her fans frequently called her.

She is survived by her second husband, Keith Davis; her sons, Tim and Sean Davis; her daughters, Hannah Mariko Shofet and Becky Steinberg; her two siblings, Jay Yamada and Karen Dolce Yamada, and two grandchildren.
