Wink Martindale resigns as Giants defensive coordinator

Wink Martindale has announced his resignation as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator. Martindale, who has been with the team for the past five seasons, cited personal reasons for his decision to step down from his position.

Martindale's departure comes as a major blow to the Giants organization. Under his leadership, the team's defense has consistently ranked among the top in the league. His innovative strategies and ability to motivate players have been instrumental in their success.

Martindale's rocky relationship with coach Brian Daboll was at the heart of the divorce. It was reported during the season that the two were in a "bad place." The relationship did not improve dramatically down the stretch, according to another source close to the situation.

Thomas McGaughey, outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and his brother Kevin Wilkins on Monday.

Martindale joined the Giants under Brian Daboll in 2022 after four years as the Baltimore Ravens' defensive coordinator.

Earlier in the day, Daboll had said his expectation was that Martindale would remain the defensive coordinator next season. Hours later, the DC is gone, and the Giants will start over on defense.

Running a blitz-heavy scheme, Martindale's defenses were a roller coaster, giving up yards in chunks -- finishing in the bottom third in yards allowed in each season -- but also affecting quarterbacks and forcing turnovers. In 2023, the Giants tied for the NFL lead with 31 takeaways.

That personality is why he and Daboll butted heads so much during their two years together. Daboll, as television cameras illustrated seemingly countless times during games, wears his emotions on his sleeve. He’s hot-headed and has no problem publicly chewing out those for their mishaps. That works for some but rubs others the wrong way. It was one of the criticisms centered around him during his time as the Browns offensive coordinator from 2009 through 2010.

Daboll and Martindale looked past those clashes a year ago. It was easy to — the Giants made the playoffs and beat the Vikings in the first round. It was much harder in 2023, with the Giants finishing 6-11 and seeing their playoff hopes all but dashed before Halloween.

Tommy DeVito, a New Jersey native who started six games as an undrafted free agent and developed a following, also is in the mix. His stock seems to have lost some of its value in recent weeks when Taylor took over and played well.

Jones said Monday he hopes to be ready to play at the start of training camp.

“I’m still very confident,” said Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 draft draft who signed a $160 million contract in March. “Like any offseason, there will be areas to work on to improve and see where you can take a step forward. But still confident in myself, confident in the group, confident in what we’re doing here.”
