Liz Cheney said Tuesday that she’s committed to doing what’s necessary to stop former President Donald Trump from returning to the White House, as she continues to mull a third-party presidential run in 2024.
“There’s a huge amount of work to be done after this election cycle, whether it’s rebuilding the Republican Party – which increasingly looks like, you know, maybe an impossible task – or helping to begin a new party that’s very focused on what the Republican Party used to stand for before this cult of personality. But right now and in this election cycle, I’ll do whatever I have to do to make sure Donald Trump’s not elected,” she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on “AC360.”
Cheney, an outspoken critic of Trump, said a third-party challenge in 2024 should be considered, but warned that uniting against the former president “can’t be a partisan issue.”
Cheney estimates that the number of Republicans in Congress who believe Trump's lie about the 2020 election is very small — "probably you can count them almost on one hand." Instead, she says, the majority of her former colleagues made a political calculation to go along with the former president, despite the fact that they know better. She says some colleagues even privately thanked her for speaking out against Trump.
"[Sen. Mitch McConnell] urged me directly that we just need to ignore Trump and he'll go away," Cheney says. "And I think now we're seeing the real consequences of that. He's not going away."
The former Wyoming lawmaker's vocal critiques of Trump in the wake of Jan. 6 and his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss helped lead to the end of her congressional career; she was defeated in a 2022 primary by a Trump-backed Republican opponent.
On Tuesday, Cheney released a new book, "Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning," which focuses on the fallout of the 2020 race and the events around Jan. 6 -- describing Trump as "the most dangerous man ever to inhabit the Oval Office."
Washington Post on Monday that in years past she would not have contemplated a third-party candidacy, but expressed concern over the influence of Trump on the Republican party, stating, "I happen to think democracy is at risk at home, obviously, as a result of Donald Trump’s continued grip on the Republican Party, and I think democracy is at risk internationally as well." But Cheney underscored that she would not take any actions that might take votes away from Biden and aid Trump's return to power.
However unlikely the prospects for Cheney’s potential third-party run, her book offers hints about how she’d govern and attempt to realign the Republican party without Trump.
