Harry Edward Styles has shaved his head and we're…not okay.
By now, we all know Styles loves a well-timed hair transformation. I personally will never forget where I was when I heard he cut off his long, wavy hair. (He later donated it to make a wig for a child with cancer.) Now, new photos have surfaced of the star sans basically any hair at all, making this the most dramatic transformation he's done yet.
Styles’ hair has been through many eras, including the time he decided rock shoulder-grazing strands in 2015. Yet, the one cut that has stuck for the past few years has been his coiffed textured waves, which saw the singer through his mega Love on Tour concert series.
Back in July, PEOPLE spoke with his hairstylist Ayae Yamamoto, the woman behind Styles’ on-stage looks, on how she handled a mane with such esteem.
“Hair changes, especially drastic ones, can signify a change in identity or a new phase in life,” Joshi continues. “This can evoke strong emotions, both for the person undergoing the change and for those close to them. It’s a visible alteration of appearance, which can be startling or unsettling at first. Visual cues play a big role in how we feel about something or someone, and so the emotional response, whilst not necessarily seeming rational, can be quite normal.”
The reason why a bold new hairstyle, whether it be from adding extensions to short hair or getting a pixie cut, can make us so emotional, explains psychologist Renate Meyer, is because of how intrinsic it is to our self-identity.
OG fans of One Direction—Styles’s original boy band—developed a somewhat parasocial relationship with the singer’s curls, as devoted witnesses to his long and winding hair journey. (Recall his Tarzan era in the mid-2010s.) And, given men’s susceptibility to balding, we all probably knew this latest development was inevitable. Losing hair is just another signifier of the passage of time, and fans are likely not mourning Harry’s locks so much as mourning their youth. Don’t cry because it’s over—smile because it happened!
Besides, given Styles’s various other hair transformations over the years, this probably won’t be his last one. There are loads of reason to shave one’s head besides the advent of balding! Maybe he’s about to release new music and, in true pop star fashion, cropped his hair to mark the incoming era. Maybe Taylor Swift’s new song really did inspire him to get a new ’do. Maybe he just felt like it.
