Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea

Tottenham vs Chelsea player ratings reflect a wild London derby, as the bitter rivals went at it under the lights on Monday.

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs lost for the first time this season as they took an early lead through Dejan Kulusevski but were reduced to nine men as both Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off, while James Maddison and Micky van de Ven were forced off in a game of true chaos.

Chelsea were victorious as Cole Palmer’s first half penalty kick and two late goals from Nicolas Jackson grabbed a statement win for the Blues who created chances throughout but had multiple goals ruled out by VAR and offside calls.

It's been a tricky start as Blues boss for Pochettino, and while there's been evidence of a recent turnaround in form, their 2-0 defeat to Brentford at home last time out starkly illustrated how much work is still left to be done before the west Londoners can be considered contenders once more.

Postecoglou could of course tell his players it was a freak game. That’s one way of putting it. It was almost several different events in one, as we saw a spell akin to the infamous Battle of the Bridge as well as Saturday’s Copa Libertadores final, a grand staging for every debate about VAR over and over and then what amounted to a bizarre but brave training session, where Postecoglou seemingly set up the irrepressible Guglielmo Vicario against the entirety of Chelsea’s young attack.

Dejan Kulusevski to his right. The winger then made his way into the box and took a strike from the edge of the area took a massive deflection and went in.

Pre-match, the Opta expected points table (below) suggested that Spurs had been rather fortunate to have won 26 points, while Chelsea were the biggest underperformers with seven points fewer than their expected points total of 19. Tonight’s match saw some of Tottenham’s luck run out, while Chelsea finally got closer to the points tally that their underlying performances suggest that they should have.
