La Liga: Sevilla vs. Real Madrid (1-1)

Sport by : (PRESSBEE) -

Real Madrid a 1-1 draw at Sevilla on Saturday as the LaLiga leaders battled back after David Alaba's own goal had given the hosts the lead.

Madrid moved on to 25 points from 10 games, three ahead of Girona, the surprise package of the season who host bottom side Almeria on Sunday. Barcelona, third on 21 points, face Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham saw goals ruled out by VAR, for offside and a foul in the build-up respectively.

The game was something of a feisty encounter, with few chances, but Sevilla found a way through as a cross into the box was diverted into his own net by David Alaba just after the 70 minute mark. Kepa Arrizabalaga could only push the ball into the roof of his own net.

Real hit back almost instantly, as Dani Carvajal powered a header into the back of the net from a superb Toni Kroos delivery.

Ramos started his career with Sevilla but soon moved to Madrid, where he won 22 trophies in 16 seasons — including four Champions League titles — before leaving in 2021. After two frustrating years with Paris Saint-Germain, the former Spain defender returned to Sevilla.

Ramos saved a goal-bound shot by former teammate Toni Kroos in the first half. The center back also had two late scoring chances to almost snatch the win for the hosts.

Ramos featured in some run-ins with Antonio Rudiger, who arrived at Madrid last season in part to fill the hole left by the aging Ramos. In one clash, Ramos grabbed the cheeks of Rudiger while the Germany defender held him as they exchanged words.

Ramos also clashed with Jude Bellingham, Madrid’s new star. Ramos elbowed Bellingham in the head during a corner and earned a yellow card for a foul on him in the second half.

Sevilla only committed a total of 12 fouls, meaning that half were on the Real Madrid playmaker, while that figure was twice as many as were on the next most-fouled player, Vinícius Júnior, on three.

It was successful in limiting Bellingham, who registered only one shot from outside the box which was blocked. It reflected new Sevilla coach Diego Alonso’s approach to shutting him down and denying him any space between the lines, though Bellingham was still effective, winning a match-high nine duels.
