GOP source: Tom Emmer seeking House speaker nomination

Cultural by : (PRESSBEE) -

GOP members have since announced that they are running for the role, while others are spending the weekend making calls about potentially entering the race. The next nominee will be the third in 17 days — after a historic vote ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) was first nominated for the post, but resistance to his candidacy forced him to withdraw a day later.

The field of those vying to be the new nominee is quickly becoming crowded. The House will return on Monday evening to choose a new nominee.

Tom Emmer (R-Minn.).

Before being elected to Congress, Emer served three terms as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011.

The former president’s top allies are already working to thwart Emmer’s candidacy. Trump supporters have begun passing around opposition research on the congressmember, and the pro-Trump “War Room” podcast on Friday afternoon turned into an Emmer bash-fest. During an appearance on the program, top Trump adviser Boris Epshteyn noted that Emmer had yet to endorse Trump in the Republican presidential primary.

“If somebody is so out of step with where the Republican electorate is, where the MAGA movement is, how can they even be in the conversation?” Epshteyn said. “We need a MAGA speaker. That’s what it comes down to. Because if you look at the numbers, if you look at the energy, if you look at the heat, this is the Trump party, this is the MAGA party. It is no longer the old-school khaki establishment Republican Party.

"The American people deserve a functioning Congress. It is my hope that my House colleagues can come together to get this election done, get the House back in order, and get back to working for the American people."

In the interim period since McCarthy's ouster, Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry has been serving as speaker pro tempore.

Rep. Ken Buck, of Colorado, voted for Emmer multiple times during the most recent votes for speaker, during which Jordan failed to secure enough votes to secure the role.

Emmer is among eight people who could be potential candidates to lead the House of Representatives. FOX News is reporting Republicans are expected to meet behind closed doors Monday evening for a candidate forum before a conference-wide election via anonymous ballot on Tuesday.

The House of Representatives has been unable to conduct business without this leadership position filled.
