Mikey Williams was ordered to stand trial by a Superior Court judge in California on Tuesday as he faces six felony gun charges from an incident earlier this summer in which he is accused of firing a gun at a vehicle carrying five people. Williams, a former five-star prospect who was at one point ranked as the No. 2 player in his class, is not currently with the Tigers team but remains on the roster and enrolled in classes as his legal situation plays out, the school said in September.
Williams has been free on $50,000 bond since his arrest on April 13. At a hearing Tuesday, Judge Sherry M. Thompson-Taylor assigned an arraignment date of Oct. 24 for Williams, according to the Associated Press.
There was a brief incident at Tuesday's hearing, too. Deputy district attorney George Modlin told Thompson-Taylor that he had received reports from someone in the courtroom that members of the gallery were making both hand gestures and facial expressions, which could've been attempts to intimidate a witness, per the report. It’s unclear who was making the alleged gestures.
Arizona State, Oregon, Tennessee and San Diego State, among others. He visited Kansas, too, before committing to play for Penny Hardaway and Memphis. Williams grew a massive social media following and signed a multimillion-dollar shoe deal with Puma while in high school, too.
Deputy District Attorney George Modlin said in an El Cajon Superior Court Tuesday he may file additional charges, according to the Union Tribune.
The San Diego Sherriff's Department alleges Williams struck a vehicle several times with gunfire. Troy P. Owens, Williams' attorney, told CBS Sports the incident was caused by "several uninvited individuals" that entered Williams' residence.
Thompson-Taylor he had received reports from someone in the courtroom that members of the public gallery were making hand gestures and facial expressions that could have been attempts at intimidating a witness. He asked her to clear the courtroom if they continued, and she warned the public she would not tolerate such actions.
Williams was one of the name, image and likeness era's earliest stars, securing a multiyear deal with shoe and athletic apparel maker Puma for an undisclosed amount in 2021. He had millions of followers across his social media platforms before apparently deactivating them. On3.com once estimated his NIL valuation at $3.6 million, but Williams' name no longer appears in the rankings.
