Bruins win over Blackhawks (1-3)

Bruins will commence their Centennial celebrations on Wednesday night as they host the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2023-24 season opener at TD Garden.

“Training camp always kind of drags on the last week,” said Bruins captain Brad Marchand. “You just start looking so forward to the season and getting things underway. Watching the games [Tuesday] night definitely gets you excited, so that's what we've been building for all camp, all summer. Get back at it and start building our game from tonight.”

The Bruins' victory spoiled the milestone for Bedard, the league's most anticipated rookie in nearly a decade. The No. 1 overall draft pick also registered his first penalty and gave the Blackhawks a scare when he crashed into the boards skates first late in the third period and was slow getting up.

TD Garden. Those Boston hockey legends who received some time in the spotlight in the stands included Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Cam Neely, Johnny Bucyk, Rick Middleton, Terry O'Reilly and Ray Bourque.

Willie O'Ree, who broke the NHL's color barrier with the Bruins in 1958, was recognized virtually from his San Diego home.

The remaining Bruins players who have their numbers retired have passed on, but they were represented on the TD Garden ice by family members. Eddie Shore was represented by his son, Ted Shore; Lionel Hitchman was represented by his granddaughter, Pamela Coburn; Aubrey "Dit" Clapper was represented by his grandson, Gregory Theberge; and Milt Schmidt was represented by his daughter, Nancy Sommer.

Johnny Bucyk, a two-time Cup winner and a member of the NHL’s 100-year-anniversary team, was showered with cheers of “Chief” like he was about to lace up the skates with the rest of Lunch Pail A.C.

After coming up short on two power plays and killing off a penalty in the second, the Bruins grabbed a 2-1 lead at 13:09 of the period when Pastrnak took Milan Lucic's cross-ice feed and whipped home a shot from high on the left circle.

Lucic's assist was his first point with the Bruins since March 31, 2015.

Pastrnak iced the game with an empty-netter in the final minute of the third.

Bedard lifted Chicago to a 1-0 advantage 5:37 into the game. After taking a shot from the right circle off a give-and-go with Ryan Donato, Bedard picked up the puck from Taylor Hall, circled the net and stuffed the puck inside the left post.
