Arizona State will play one more game as Pac-12 foes in Week 6 before they depart for the greener pastures of the Big 12 in the 2024 college football season. While the anticipation of a new conference home means long-term optimism for both programs, the Buffaloes and Sun Devils still have a lot of work to do in 2023. Neither team has noted a conference victory this season after stumbling to 0-2 starts in conference play. However, one team is guaranteed to finally bust into that win column as we approach the midway point of the season.
The coach’s son was still effective when he needed to be, running for a touchdown in the first half and hitting Antonio on a 9-yard score in the fourth quarter. After Arizona State tied it with 50 seconds left, Sanders found Antonio again, this time on a 43-yard connection that set up Mata's winning kick to give Colorado (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) its first Pac-12 win in a year.
“Pops doesn't talk to me that much during the game. He lets me be me,” Shedeur Sanders said. “I’ve been living with him my whole life so he couldn't tell me anything I haven’t heard before. I just looked down the sideline, just seeing everybody body language — the coaches and everybody — they knew what time it was.”
ASU fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Buffaloes outscored Arizona State in the second half, 13-7 after ASU had led at the half, 17-14.
Shedeur Sanders went 26-for-42 passing for 239 yards for Colorado, well under his average of 356.2 yards passing per game entering the game. He had a touchdown passing and one rushing.
Kenny Dillingham. Without true freshman starting quarterback Jaden Rashada, the Sun Devils lost 24–21 to Cal last week and still have four ranked opponents on the schedule, so Saturday’s contest against the Buffaloes may be one of the program’s best remaining chances to scrape out a win this season.
