Seattle Seahawks' defense shined as they beat the New York Giants 24-3 at MetLife Stadium on Monday night. Giants QB Daniel Jones turned the ball over three times and was sacked 10 times.
It wasn't all great for the Seahawks as safety Jamal Adams was lost early in the first quarter after being evaluated for a concussion. It was his first game back since he suffered a torn left quad tendon in last season's opening game.
Giants drive that ventured to the Seahawks 5-yard line and threatened to make it a one-possession game. Instead, Witherspoon went 97 yards the other way and solidified a prime-time rout.
Witherspoon reached a top speed of 20.25 mph on the return, per Next Gen Stats, weaving across the field to pay dirt. He was accompanied by a convoy of teammates, Julian Love and Tariq Woolen, the latter reaching 22.25 mph as a blocker -- the fastest speed on a play from scrimmage this season, per Next Gen.
"Really it was just, don't get caught," Witherspoon said of what was going through his head. "Really mad at Riq and J. Love (Julian Love) because they made me look slow. They kind of walked me down, made me look slow. But shout out to them. I was just trying to get to the box, man. That was an incredible moment for me. First career pick is a pick-six on Monday Night Football. It don't get no better."
Seahawks had officially ruled Smith questionable to return after his exit. Smith had attempted a short pass over the middle with 10:07 left in the first half, only for Giants defensive lineman D.J. Davidson to knock the ball into the air -- and back into Smith's arms. Linebacker Isaiah Simmons then chased Smith down toward the sideline, eventually dragging the QB to the ground. After spending an extra moment seated, Smith showed a limp as he walked, then returned to the Giants sideline to bark frustration at the opposing team.
The bad came on a third-and-10 late in the first half, when tight end Noah Fant evaded tacklers up the sideline for a 51-yard catch-and-run down the Giants' goal line. Drew Lock had just temporarily replaced starting quarterback Geno Smith, who left with a knee injury (he returned in the second half), and Kennth Walker III punched it in for a touchdown and a 14-3 Seahawks lead.
Thibodeaux recorded another sack in the fourth quarter for the first multi-sack game of his career.
Outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari returned after missing the past two games with a hamstring injury.
