didn’t have previews today, but based on presales and upcoming matinees, the tike sequel is eyeing a $6.5 million Friday and a $22 million opening at 3,644 theaters.
Paramount took the first movie out in theaters and Paramount+ day-and-date back in 2021, scoring a $13.1M opening and $40.1M result.
This is the kind of big-screen main event that brings Nicole Kidman back to a movie theater: the combo of superpowered rescue dogs and a guy with a penchant for death traps. Because if you thought “Barbenheimer” was lit, get a load of “Saw Patrol.”
Saw X,” the latest installment of the gory horror franchise, are in theaters this weekend, battling for box-office supremacy. But if the summertime dynamic duo of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” taught us anything, it’s that polar-opposite movies out the same weekend aren’t enemies. They’re friends!
This somber cello-scored intro becomes a passage, then an entire first act, and it’s impossible not to smile at how veteran “Saw” editor-turned-director Kevin Greutert commits to the long game. As it happens, Kramer hears about an experimental treatment: a cocktail-surgery combo unapproved by the FDA. Though weak, he flies to a secret clinic in Mexico City, where a saintly team of doctors and helpers eases him back toward hope.
“PAW Patrol” follows a team of search and rescue dogs who save the town of Adventure City. The voice cast includes McKenna Grace, Taraji P. Henson, Marsai Martin, Kim Kardashian, Chris Rock and James Marsden. The first movie opened in 2021 with $13 million, while simultaneously releasing on Paramount+ due to the pandemic. With a $30 million budget, the sequel aims to outperform the original.
“Saw X” is also poised to improve over the previous franchise entries. Star Tobin Bell, who plays the serial killer Jigsaw, is back for the 10th movie, which takes place chronologically between the original “Saw” and “Saw II.” With a $13 million budget, “Saw X” should succeed over 2021’s “Spiral” ($8.7 million opening) and possibly 2017’s “Jigsaw” ($16.6 million).
Tracking had Saw X way ahead at $20M since it’s the first franchise pic with Saw in the title since 2010’s Saw 3D. The previous movie, Spiral, bottomed out to a franchise-low opening of $8.75M and a $23.2M domestic take. Lionsgate lifted the review embargo late in the game on Saw X, and it turned out that the sequel at 85% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes is the best critical rating for the franchise ever. The $13M production plays at 3,262 theaters, the widest ever for a Saw movie. Through nine movies to date, the franchise has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and is one of the longest running horror franchises in cinema history.
