Prominent Egyptian women’s advocate Dr Farkhonda Hassan passed away at the age of 90, announced Egypt’s National Council for Women in a statement on Friday. Hassan, whose career was centred around women’s causes across a range of sectors, previously served on the the Gender Advisory Board of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development and was formerly the Secretary-General of the National Council for Women. Born in 1930, Hassan graduated from Cairo University’s Faculty of science in 1952 before pursuing postgraduate studies at Pittsburgh University and receiving her PhD in geology.
