Danilo Cavalcante, at 5 feet tall, seemed the perfect fit as he wedged himself in the narrow space between the walls in an exercise yard of the Chester County Prison on the morning of August 31.
The convicted murderer then ascended in a crab-walk until he disappeared from the view of a surveillance camera. Cavalcante employed a climbing technique that another inmate used to escape in May. He then ran across a roof, scaled a fence and pushed his way through razor wire to freedom.
In the 13 days between Danelo Cavalcante’s escape from prison and his capture on Wednesday, the convicted murderer led authorities on an intense manhunt across southeastern Pennsylvania, riveting the nation and alarming the state.
The sprawling search operation included hundreds of heavily armed officers scouring the region with dogs, horses, drones, heat-sensing devices and other tactical equipment. And yet Cavalcante managed to elude capture for close to two weeks.
Cavalcante, who was known to have recently stolen a rifle, was apprehended "with no shots fired," and no police officers were injured in the operation, Gov. Josh Shapiro said.
Chester County, where an aircraft had picked up a heat signal overnight, Bivens said.
A "burglar alarm" sounded around midnight at a residence within the perimeter, according to police. Officers did not find Cavalcante, or anyone else, at the residence when they investigated the alarm, but the heat signal eventually leading to his capture was detected in that area after 1 a.m. At that point, the aircraft began to track it. However, lightning storms moving through the region prevented the craft from continuing its flight and tactical team members instead formed a new perimeter around the spot where the heat signal had shown up. The manhunt resumed Wednesday morning.
While on the run, police said Cavalcante had tried to contact people he knew, including his sister. She did not help him and was later taken into custody for an immigration violation.
On Tuesday, they warned that the escaped murderer had entered an open garage in the area and fled with a .22 calibre rifle as the homeowner fired several shots in his direction.
