Miami Hurricanes football safety Kamren Kinchens was carted off the field after a tackle attempt during the team’s 48-33 upset victory against No. 23 Texas A&M on Saturday.
The injury happened late in the fourth quarter at Hard Rock Stadium, when Kinchens took a blow to the chest as he attempted to tackle Aggies receiver Ainias Smith. The safety laid motionless after making the tackle.
Players from both teams gathered around the 20-year-old as he was looked at by medical staff. The All-American player was carted off the field following a lengthy delay.
According to ABC’s broadcast of the game, Kinchens was awake and communicating with medical staff as he left the field. He was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.
Kinchens was immobilized on a board by Miami medical trainers and carted off the field. He was awake and talking, according to the ESPN broadcast. Before leaving with the injury, Kinchens had a strong game with seven tackles and an interception.
Mario Cristobal said that everything seemed "to be relatively normal" with Kinchens. "Hard to talk about the game after something like that happens," Crisotbal added.
Fellow safety James Williams said he told Kinchens "Look at me, keep your eyes open, breathe" as his teammate lay on the field.
Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke called Kinchens "the heart and soul of this program" and sent prayers to his teammate.
"Hopefully he's OK," Van Dyke said. "He's the main leader of the team, brings it every day in practice, makes us work, so hopefully he's ok. The quarterback was trying to fit it into a tight window and he was just trying to make a play on the ball. I think his head got caught up a little bit in the other guy."
Texas A&M should be the biggest Miami home non-conference game since the 41-8 2017 win over Notre Dame. ESPN College Gameday appeared on the Miami campus for the first time that morning. Herbstreit called the win over Notre Dame and the 28-10 victory over Virginia Tech the week prior.
