Arleen Sorkin, who portrayed Calliope Jones on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives and served as the original voice of the DC Comics character Harley Quinn, had died. She was 67.
Sorkin died Thursday, a source told The Hollywood Reporter. Health issues kept her from acting in recent years.
DC boss James Gunn wrote on Instagram Saturday: “Rest in Peace, Arleen Sorkin, the incredibly talented original voice of Harley Quinn, who helped to create the character so many of us love. Love to her family and friends.”
Sorkin’s most notable claim to fame is without a doubt being the inspiration for and original voice of Harley Quinn on Batman: The Animated Series. What was originally supposed to be a minor, one-off character, Sorkin’s performance was so memorable and beloved that Harley became Joker’s de facto partner, and even starred in several episodes of her own.
Harley Quinn has seen widespread notoriety and popularity over the past three decades, becoming one of the most popular characters in pop culture. Sorkin voiced Harley for several years, across different Batman spin-off series, movies, and video games, before retiring from the role after her performance in DC Universe Online.
Lady Gaga is set to play Harley Quinn in Joker 2.
As for Sorkin, her other contributions include writing for Tiny Toon Adventures from 1990 to 1992. She reprised the role one last time in DC Universe Online, having previously appeared in Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Prior to voice acting, Sorkin played Calliope Jones in Days of Our Lives and was a co-host on America’s Funniest People. She was married to television producer Christopher Lloyd (co-creator of Modern Family) and had two sons.
As a voice actor, Sorkin became known for giving life to Joker's partner-in-crime and on-and-off spouse, Harley Quinn, in "Batman: The Animated Series" starting in 1992
