LeBron James, is expected to return to the court "in the very near future" after suffering cardiac arrest during a workout in July, a family spokeswoman said in a statement Friday.
The likely cause of Bronny James' cardiac arrest was a congenital heart defect, which was identified after an initial evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and follow-up evaluations at the Mayo Clinic and the Atlantic Health-Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey, according to the spokeswoman.
A congenital heart defect is a broad term referring to any abnormality of heart structure that is present from birth, which results when the heart, or blood vessels near the heart, don't develop normally before birth.
Bronny James was a McDonald's All-American in his senior season in high school and the No. 20 player in the country in ESPN's recruiting rankings.
The rising basketball star and freshman at USC was first admitted to the intensive care unit after suffering cardiac arrest at a practice, a family spokesperson said. He was later listed in stable condition before being discharged on July 27.
James, who is a freshman at the University of Southern California, sustained sudden cardiac arrest on July 24 while working out on the USC campus. He was hospitalized in intensive care before returning to stable condition.
The 18-year-old four-star recruit committed to the Trojans in May after averaging 14 points, five rebounds and three assists in his senior campaign at Sierra Canyon (Los Angeles) School last season. He possesses many of the unselfish skills as his dad.
Since the incident, Bronny has been away from the team as it prepares for the 2023-24 season, including missing the team's trip abroad earlier this month while doing follow-up evaluations at the Mayo Clinic.
