‘Almost the end ' Latest updates about Jimmy Carter, Rosalynn Carter

Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, are “still holding hands” as they enter their “final chapter” together at home in Plains, Georgia, the former US president’s grandson said.

“It’s clear we’re in the final chapter,” Josh Carter said of his grandparents, the first couple between 1977 and 1981, in an interview published by People magazine on Saturday.

Jimmy Carter, 98, entered hospice care in February, seeking “to spend his remaining time at home with his family”. In May, the Carter family announced that Rosalynn Carter, 96, has dementia.

“My grandparents have always been the entertainers,” Josh Carter told People. “But now we’re kind of the ones having to entertain. It’s different, it’s just a different era.”

Grandson Josh Carter told People that the former president is still fully himself, but just tired. Carter is almost 99 years old.

Josh Carter, 39, told People magazine. "He's just tired. I mean, he's almost 99 years old, but he fully understands [how many well wishes he's received] and has felt the love."

Georgia ranch house that the couple built in 1961, said Josh. “My grandparents have always been the entertainers," he said. "But now we're kind of the ones having to entertain. It’s different, it's just a different era."

The former first lady, whose dementia diagnosis was revealed in May, just celebrated her 96th birthday on Friday.

The couple’s grandson told People the former president is “still fully Jimmy Carter.”

Josh remembers when his grandparents were entertainers, full of exciting stories from their travels around the world, he said in an interview with PEOPLE. But since Jimmy entered at-home hospice care in February and Rosalynn was diagnosed with dementia, the family is in a “different era,” Josh said.

Jimmy is 98 and Rosalynn turned 96 last Friday. The couple celebrated her birthday at their home in Plains with cupcakes, peanut butter ice cream and a butterfly release, the Carter Center said.
