Harry Kane has made his official Bayern Munich debut, coming on as a substitute in the club’s crushing 3-0 defeat to German Cup winners RB Leipzig in the Super Cup final in Munich on Saturday.
The 30-year-old came on in the second half to a rousing ovation from the crowd at the Allianz Arena. However, it wasn’t enough as the club dropped its season opener.
RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo scored a hat trick as the German side won its first Super Cup.
It comes hours after Kane announced on social media that he was leaving Tottenham Hotspur, the club he has spent the past 19 years playing for, having signed a reported a $126 million transfer deal with Bayern Munich.
Manchester City in 2021, and his future had been uncertain this summer because he only had one year left on his contract at Spurs.
He was also linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid earlier this summer, before Bayern made their move. After having several bids rejected, a deal was agreed on Thursday, with Kane flying to Munich on Friday to finalise matters.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said the club had "reluctantly agreed to his transfer".
With Bayern wasteful up front, squandering half a dozen chances, coach Thomas Tuchel brought on Kane, whose transfer cost a Bundesliga record €100 million ($110m), in the 64th minute to huge cheers from Bayern fans.
But he hardly got a look-in, with only three touches, and it was Olmo who scored again, this time with a penalty only four minutes later, to secure the first title of the season for his team.
"It was amazing night. We worked a lot over 90 minutes, also with possession," Olmo said. "I think it was a perfect game.
"We expected to win, we wanted to lift this trophy, and there is no better way to start the season," he said.
Bayern’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said trying to sign Kane had been a “long process.”
“He is a perfect fit for us and the club’s DNA in terms of both football and character,” Dreesen told the Bayern website.
“World-class centre forwards have always been an important factor when FC Bayern has celebrated its greatest triumphs, and we’re convinced that Harry Kane will continue this success story.”
Kane made his Bayern debut on Saturday, coming on as a second-half substitute in the German Super Cup against RB Leipzig. The Munich club was comprehensively beaten 3-0 after Dani Olmo scored a hat-trick.
