Longtime Smith County Rescue Squad Chief Sonny Carter stepped down from the position effective July 31, 2023 at midnight. Chief Carter joined the rescue squad in 1980. He has been a member of the organization for 43 years and served as Chief for 30 years. At the regular meeting of the squad in July, Chief Carter informed the members of his decision to retire. He stated he would still be an active member as much as possible but after 30 years in the position it was time to retire.
