De La Cruz gets the first cycle for Reds

News by : (PRESSBEE) -

De La Cruz, 21, became the first Reds player to hit for the cycle since Eric Davis on June 2, 1989. All the while, franchise royalty Joey Votto launched two home runs prior to De La Cruz putting the finishing touches on his cycle in the sixth inning. De La Cruz finished the game 4-for-5.

RBIs and six stolen bases while boasting a .321/.387/.536 batting line. Cincinnati is 41-35, good for first in the NL Central, and has won its last 12 games.

Cincinnati Reds extend their longest winning streak since 1957 to 12 games Friday night at Great American Ball Park. The Reds erased 5-0 and 7-5 deficits against the National League-best Atlanta Braves to earn an 11-10 win (box score). Cincinnati leads baseball with 27 comeback wins and this was their fifth straight comeback win.

It wasn't that long ago -- April 17, to be exact -- the Reds played in front of a home crowd of 7,375. That was the smallest crowd in Great American Ball Park history. Now the place is packed, and Friday's atmosphere was positively electric. The team is very good and very fun, and fans are showing up to support them. Good times in the Queen City.

Here are five takeaways from the Reds' thrilling come-from-behind win to extend their winning streak Friday night.

De La Cruz doubled to open the second inning, had a two-run homer in the third, a run-scoring single to center in the fifth and tripled in the sixth for his fourth RBI of the night. The last hit increased the Reds’ lead to 11-7.

The cycle is the franchise’s seventh overall — fifth since 1900 — and first since Eric Davis did it against San on June 2, 1989.

De La Cruz called it an honor to play with Votto.

"Because he's just a legend of the game," De La Cruz said. "I admire him, he admires me back. He tells me that as well. I mean, we just have these conversations over and over, how much we respect each other…"

"I didn't say I admired you back," Votto blurted from the back of the press conference room, drawing laughs. “But I do. I do admire you."

"I heard you say it," De La Cruz replied, in English.

In a wild matchup of National League division leaders, Cincinnati erased an early 5-0 deficit and halted Atlanta's eight-game winning streak.

The Reds' winning streak is tied for the second-best in franchise history, matching the 1939 and 1957 teams for the club's longest since 1900.

The streak is tied with the 1890 Louisville Colonels for the longest win streak by any team that lost at least 100 games the previous season in major league history.
