An elderly Northern California man told sheriff’s deputies that a stranger broke into his home, took away his gun and then killed himself with it. The encounter happened around midnight Wednesday on Old Oregon Trail, an area of widely spaced homes on Redding’s eastern outskirts. The 80-year-old homeowner told Shasta County sheriff’s deputies that he was in his living room when he heard glass breaking at the back of his house.
